January Meet-up!
Anybody hungry out there? Let's liven this community up again!

January's meetup:
This Sunday 2pm (January 30, 2011)
Bohemian Brewery
94 East 7200 South
Salt Lake City UT

Check out www.bohemianbrewery.com for more info about their beers, menu, and prices. In addition to the usual bar faire, they also have salads, pizza, pasta, brunch, sandwiches, burgers, and potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream. If you are into beer, they have sample sizes available for only fifty cents. The meals are a bit on the spendy side ($9 for burgers, salads range from $5 to $15) but the desserts and appetizers look great too, so something for everyone.

Please reply if you'll be joining us and how many people so I can get us a table or possibly a reservation depending on our size.

On the list for upcoming meetups in 2011:
Red Iguana
The Other Place (breakfast)
Au Naturale (thanks to dawnjuan for the suggestion!)

This week for lunch I ate once at Jasmine and once at Dragon Diner.  Both were excellent!

At Jasmine, I had the bento box lunch, which came with a salad, bowl of rice, hot sour soup, cali rolls, gyoza, shrimp & vege tempura.

At Dragon Diner, I had a lunch special with "Snowball Shrimp" which is similar to honey walnut shrimp, which came with yummy fried rice, some of the best paper wrapped chicken I've ever had, and hot sour soup.

I would go to both places again!

I tried the Tiburon off 90th S and 7th East tonight for the first time.  I must say, it was delish, service was fantastic, and it was a fancy joint.  Very pricy, though.  We got the crab cakes for appetizer- came with 4 pieces.  VERY delicious.  Next they brought out a little glass with 2 types of sweet and sour sorbet.  I believe this was "complimentary" with the meal, as we hadn't ordered it.  They brought out a bread basket with some sort of fancy butter which I didn't try.  Then, they brought out a salad with some sort of sweet dressing, various greens, candied pecans, and shredded white cheese.  It was delish!  Also "complimentary" with the meal, since we didn't order them.  I ordered a steak which was cooked a tad too much (I ordered MR) but was nicely seasoned and had 2 yummy sauces on top.  Came with green beans and some sort of very tasty stringy soft things which I guess might be onions.  We skipped dessert.  I did see a creme brulee at another table that looked tasty.  Overall, pretty lovely but I would reserve for special occasions because of the cost.

Restaurant Review: Thai Delight
I will definitely be going back to this Thai restaurant. It's a small place with "grandma found this at the thrift store" kind of decorations, but the service was great and the food was excellent. The spicy-scale goes from 1-5 plus they can make things extra spicy if you ask. I had the Masaman curry with chicken. It was quite spicy to me (I asked for medium) and the flavor was rich enough to shine through the spice. The Thai iced tea was much sweeter and redder than I have had before; it was a great compliment to the meal. Not many choices for dessert but I was very pleased with what there was - a sticky warm coconut rice pudding with thinly sliced fresh mangos over the top.

i swear one of these days I want to join y'all.  So I just want to mention www.goaunaturale.com which is off 2100 S.  I tried it this week because I got a coupon for a free entree there when I was at the Jazz game Mon night.  This place is awesome!  It has super yummy baked sweet potato fries!  I also tried the bbq pork sandwich and it was tasty.  I intend to go back and try more things.  They don't fry anything and they don't have greasy processed foods.  Not that I avoid such lardy things because I love the deep fry as much as anyone else.  But hey, this place is healthy AND tasty.

Reviews: Carino's Italian Grill and Olive Garden
Carino's Italian Grill
Sandy, UT
Dish: Vegetable Pasta Primavera (takeout)
Description: Angel hair pasta, fresh vegetables, garlic, red pepper and parmesan cheese.
Review: The marinated artichokes completely overwhelmed this dish. The vegetables were cooked together, instead of separately like primavera ought to be, and they all ended up with the same flavor. The carrots didn't work with the pasta for me. I am left wondering whether they gave me the wrong dish, but what I got wasn't great in any case.

Olive Garden
Salt Lake City, UT
Dish: Salad and Zuppa Toscana Soup (takeout)
Description: Garden fresh salad. Spicy sausage, russet potatoes and cavolo greens in a creamy broth.
Review: I don't normally comment on takeout presentation, but this was worth commenting. The custom salad container with places to hold the dressing and after-meal mint impressed me. The individual serving-size packet of parmesan was a nice touch. Breadsticks were included, in a bag that keeps the bread warm and soft. Olive Garden's salad is simple - lettuce, tomatoes, giant red onion circles, black olives, and topped with a peppercini - but is consistently fresh and well-prepared no matter the season or restaurant location. Reviewing the soup is almost cheating, as this is one of my favorite soups. I enjoy the zippy flavor, the varied textures of sausage and potatoes, and the added color of the greens.

Food Reviews
Let's not limit ourselves to posting about meetings. We all like food! I get takeout for lunch pretty often, so I am going to start posting food reviews. If you're into writing food/restaurant reviews, please share!

Aw dang, I would hope to go out on a week night.  If you ever do one on a week night I might join.  I'm from Davis Co but I work in Murray Mon through Thurs.  But here are some good ideas for local only joints:

Dodo (Gateway or Sugarhouse)- eat dessert first, trust me on this one
Takashi (sushi)
I Love Sushi (State St)
Cafe Trang (Vietnamese)
The Pie (pizza)

Also, if anyone takes a camera to these shindigs, take some piccies and post, please!

Let's Go Eat!
Welcome to the Let's Go Eat! Salt Lake City Chapter.

We will meet on a sort-of-regular basis at restaurants around the SLC area for meeting new people, having good conversations, and eating good food! Everyone is welcome. RSVP's are cool so we know how many to reserve a table for.

Local places are far preferable to national chains.

I am new to Utah and don't know any of the hidden restaurant gems yet - suggestions are welcome and encouraged!
